PLAINVIEW, Texas – The McMurry University women's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season on a sour note, falling to the NAIA's No. 10-ranked team Wayland Baptist University, 88-25, on the road.
The Flying Queens (3-0) showed their experience from the outset, jumping out to an 19-0 lead before the War Hawks (0-1) finally got on the board with a
Taylor Russell jumper. McM was not able to break into double digits in any of the quarters, trailing 20-4 after the first period and 33-11 at the half.
A suffocating defense by the Flying Queens held the young War Hawks to just 14 percent shooting from the floor and forced 29 turnovers. WBU won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding McMurry by a 54-43 margin.
Freshman
Amye Templeton came off of the McM bench to produce a team-leading seven points, hitting 2-of-4 from the field. Senior
Taylor Russell added six points and a team-best 12 rebounds.
Junior guard
Haley Welch chipped in five points, while senior
Sierra Maykus added four. Maykus and
Alex McIntosh each pulled down four rebounds, as well.
Tayler Boroson's three points closed out the War Hawks' scoring.
Chelsie Lail had five boards, with
Sham Hunter,
Karsten Pippins and
Jamie Flores nabbing two caroms apiece.
McMurry will next host the University of the Southwest on November 24 (Tuesday) at Kimbrell Arena. Tip off is at 6 p.m.
