BROWNWOOD, Texas – McMurry University senior
Holiday Williams scored in the 29th minute of play and Howard Payne knotted matters in the second half, as the teams played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Citizens National Bank Soccer Field.
The War Hawks are now 2-5-2 on the year. The Yellow Jackets are 2-5-1. It marked the second time the two teams went to double OT. In the season opener for both squads in Abilene on Sept. 1, HPU won a 2-1 decision.
Williams took control of a ball in McMurry's territory and dribble the length of the field, before sending a shot into the back of the net past Yellow Jacket goalkeeper Kelsie Piland. It was Williams' second goal of 2015.
Piland would finish the match with nine saves. McM goalie
Simone Heinle countered with 10 saves of her own.
With neither team scoring the balance of the first half, HPU need a second half score by Rachel Crane in the 50th minute to tie the match at 1-1.
In the extra periods, HPU was the only team to put a shot on goal, which was saved by Heinle. The defenses took over to leave the contest in the 1-1 draw.
The Yellow Jackets held a slight advantage in total shot attempts (18-15), but held a huge margin in corner kicks (10-4). Williams took six of McM's shots – four of which were on-goal - and
Cristen Lumbreras took four.
McMurry will next host Concordia University-Texas on Friday (Oct. 9) at 1 p.m.
