Women's Soccer Edged at SRSU, 2-1

ALPINE, Texas – McMurry University women's soccer team gave up the deciding goal in the final minutes of its match at Sul Ross State University, falling by a 2-1 score.

The War Hawks fell to 2-9-2 with the loss. The Lobos improved to 3-10.

SRSU's Valeria Rey scored an unassisted goal just 1:32 minutes into the match.  However, McM freshman Cristen Lumbreras tallied here second goal of the season in the seventh minute, thanks to an assist from Hannah Way, knotting the contest at 1-1.

The two teams remained log-jammed the balance of the first half and the majority of the second, despite plenty of offensive attempts.  The Lobos had seven shots in each half (14 for the match) and the War Hawks had eight shot tries (five in the first period).

It was not until the 88:26 mark of the match – with just 1:34 minutes left in regulation – when SRSU netted the winner. Rey fed Jaclyn Gutierrez, who sent the shot past McM goalkeeper Simone Heinle, making it the 2-1 final score.

Lumbreras finished with three of her team's shot attempts.  Marilyn Goewart added two shots for McM in the loss.

Heinle had six saves for McMurry.  Kelly Swenson had five stops for the Lobos.

The War Hawks will next play a pair of games versus Johnson & Wales College in Denver, Colorado over the weekend. The War Hawks and Wildcats play at 7 p.m. (MT) on Friday and at Noon (MT) on Sunday.
