COMMERCE, Texas – McMurry University's women's basketball team could not hold off host Texas A&M University-Commerce, falling on the road, 68-60. The loss dropped the War Hawks to 2-16 overall, while the Lions upped their record to 8-6.
TAMUC led the lion's share of the opening period. The War Hawks were able to tie the contest at 20-20 at the 8:11 mark of the period on a three-point play by
Taylor Russell. A minute later
Tayler Boroson uncorked a three-point basket that gave McM its first lead of the afternoon, 23-20.
Approaching the final minute of the opening stanza, McMurry trailed 30-28. But
Haley Welch was fouled hard on a driving layup, which was good. Welch converted the subsequent free throw as the War Hawks went up by one.
Mishae Roper's mid-range jumper with 15 tics left on the clock put McMurry up by three – 33-30 – as it stood going into the halftime locker room.
The Lions came out rejuvenated in the second half and began to wrest control from McMurry. With 8:21 left in the period, TAMUC propelled itself to a double-digit lead, 54-43, and was up by as much as 14 (57-43). Three consecutive baskets by the War Hawks – a three and a jumper from Boroson along with a Russell layup – cut the deficit to 57-50 with under five minutes left to play.
However, McM could get no closer as Commerce kept the War Hawks at bay the rest of the way.
Russell finished the day with 20 points, hitting 7-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 free throws. Russell also grabbed six rebounds in leading her team in scoring for the fifth time this season.
Boroson was McM's only other player in double figures, booking 17 points, to go along with four rebounds, two steals. Boroson converted 6-of-13 from the field and 3-of-4 from the line.
Welch contributed seven points, while
Adijatu Disu and Roper tallied six points, apiece. Roper had a team-leading eight rebounds, while also making a pair of steals and passing off for two assists.
