War Hawks Bite Bulldogs, 3-1

Box Score ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry men's soccer team snapped its two-match skid, with a 3-1 home victory over Jarvis Christian College at Wilford Moore Stadium.

The win improved the War Hawks to 3-5 on the year, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-8.

Much as it was the first meeting between these teams back on September 5 in Hawkins, JCC scored first, this time in the 29th minute. But it took McM less than two minutes to answer the Bulldogs.

At the 30:26 mark of the match, senior Jacob Howdeshell scored, unassisted, to knot matters at 1-1. Neither team would add any more scores before heading to the halftime break tied at one.

McMurry turned up the heat in period two. After both teams got off six shot attempts in the first half, the War Hawks out-shot Jarvis, 11-0, in the second stanza and 17-6 for the match.

In the 67th minute, senior Cody Gentry was able to put McM ahead for good with his team-leading sixth goal of the season, unassisted, to make the score 2-1.

Still in a precarious position, McMurry added some insurance with a little over a minute left to play when Cody Baker headed in a perfect pass from Matt Hernandez, putting the match out of reach at 3-1.

McM goalkeeper Ian McCarthy had three saves. His JCC counterpart, Jose Lopez, had four saves.

The same two teams will battle again tomorrow (Sept. 30) at Wilford Moore Stadium at 3 p.m. (following the women's match at 1 p.m.).
