ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University women's tennis bounced back from yesterday's tough first-round loss to defeat Colorado Christian University, 5-1, in its second game of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Central Region Championships, held at McM's Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
In doubles, the War Hawks' No. 1 tandem of
Lauren Renner and
Shayne Cook defeated Katy Balli and Jennifer Perkins of CCU, 8-5. At No. 2 in the pairs' play,
Jessica Bentley and
Bree Brosig declawed the Cougars' duo of Cassie Greco and Raeghan Rudkin, 8-0.
Colorado Christian took its lone win of the match at No. 3 singles.
Up 2-1 heading into singles, McMurry needed to win just three of the six matches to end the contest (matches are stopped when a team acquires the winning fifth team point).
In the race to the finish line, freshman
Chloe Patterson finished first, dispatching Rudkin by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Senior
Sheri Copenhaver topped Amy Siemers, 6-0, 6-3 to put McM ahead 4-1.
At No. 1 singles, Renner took out Kara Williams in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 to make it 5-1 and put the victory in McMurry's "W" column.
Dallas Baptist has already clinched the team title by going 3-0 in its matches. The event concludes on Saturday, with McM taking on Southern Nazarene at Noon in a match which could determine second place.
