McM Edged in NCCAA Opener, 5-4

BOX SCORE

ABILENE, Texas – The 2014 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Central Region women's tennis championship tournament got underway Thursday, with host McMurry University dropping a tough decision, 5-4, to Dallas Baptist University at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.

The match was a little closer than the previous meeting between the two Heartland Conference mates, as the Patriots (15-8) topped the War Hawks (7-14), 6-3, back on March 22.

McMurry actually held a 2-1 lead in the team score after doubles, just the opposite of the score when the teams last met. The difference came from McM's No. 1 pair of Lauren Renner and Shayne Cook, who reversed the decision on DBU's Cassandra Wenerstrom and Amanda Richter, winning 8-4 this time.

At No. 3 doubles, Chloe Patterson and Madison Hathorn defeated the Patriots' Lyvia Gomes and Alexa Mentesana, 8-2, knocking the tandem off for the second time in a little over a month.

DBU secured the victory by taking four of the six singles bouts. As in the previous match, the Patriots took the Nos. 1 through 3 contests in straight sets, as well as the No. 5 match.

McMurry's two singles points came from sisters the Patterson sisters- Chloe and Autumn.

Autumn Patterson, a senior, was first off the court in singles for McM, making short work of the Patriots' Meredith Robinson, 6-3, 6-0.

At. No. 4 singles, Chloe – a freshman – dispatched of DBU's Leah Smith in three sets. The younger Patterson won the first set, 6-2 and lost the second, 6-4. In the third set tiebreaker, she won by an 11-9 margin.

The NCCAA regional tourney continues with three matches on Friday and two on Saturday. Friday's slate includes: Dallas Baptist vs. Southern Nazarene (8:30 a.m.); Colorado Christian vs. McMurry (Noon), and; Dallas Baptist vs. Colorado Christian (4 p.m.). Admission is free.
