LAWTON, Okla. – McMurry women's tennis lost a non-conference road match, 8-1, to Cameron University at the Streich-Henry Tennis Complex.
The War Hawks (5-12) found the going tough versus the Aggies (15-4), ranked No. 49 in the nation and No. 4 in the region. McM's lone win came at No. 1 doubles, but what a key victory it would turn out to be.
The McMurry duo of senior Laura Renner and freshman
Shayne Cook scored the 9-7 win over CU's Paula Gutierrez-Casas and Florencia Tornero. The Aggie tandem entered the match as the No. 4-ranked doubles team in the NCAA Division II South Central Region.
The War Hawks lost the remaining two doubles bouts, as well as all six singles matches. Five of the six singles competitions were decided in straight sets. At No. 6 singles, freshman
Allie Hawkins lost the first set, 6-1, but rebounded to take the second, 7-5, versus Laura Roberts. Roberts would narrowly win the third-set tiebreaker, 10-8.
