ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University's women's tennis team ran into a buzzsaw versus NCAA Division I Cleveland State University, falling 9-0 in a non-conference match at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center.
The Vikings, coming off of a narrow 4-3 loss at ACU Saturday afternoon, dominated the NCAA II War Hawks. CSU swept all three doubles matches and then won all six singles bouts in straight sets.
Other than at No. 1 singles, where
Lauren Renner dropped a 6-3, 6-4 match to the Vikings' Lauren Golick and No. 2 singles where
Shayne Cook fell by a 6-1, 6-3 counts, no other McM player was able to win more than two games in any set.
The War Hawks battled tough in the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles contests. Renner and Cook – playing No. 1 doubles – duked it out with CSU's Alex Power and Ellen Folkers. Trailing at one point by a 7-3 margin, the duo eventually knotted matters at 8-8, before the Viking tandem won the tiebreaker set, 7-2.
At No. 2 doubles,
Jessica Bentley and
Bree Brosig fought hard, but came up just short, 9-7.
McMurry (0-5) will look for its first win of the season when it plays host to Newman University on March 16 in a Heartland Conference match.
