SILVER CITY, N.M. – McMurry University women's tennis snapped its four-match skid, with a 6-3 non-conference win at Western New Mexico University.
With the win, the War Hawks improved to 2-10 overall.
McM found itself behind the proverbial eight ball early, as the Mustangs won two of three doubles matches. The War Hawks only doubles win came at the No. 3 position where freshmen
Madison Hathorn and
Chloe Patterson defeated WNMU's Claudia Osuna and Marissa Aguirre, 8-5.
But in singles, the War Hawks were dominating, taking five of six matches at the Nos. 2-6 slots. Three of those victories were three-set matches. At No. 2 singles, freshman
Shayne Cook had one of the marathon matches, defeating Marie Monier, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
At No. 3, Patterson lost her first set, 7-5, before winning the next two by scores of 6-3, 7-5. Hathorn and
Allie Hawkins won straight-set victories at the No 4 and 5 matches, respectively.
At No. 6,
Sheri Copenhaver opened her match with a set one win, 6-3, but fell in the second set, 7-6. In the set three pro-set tiebreaker, Copenhaver won 10-8, helping McM to the 6-3 team win.
