Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Dave Beyer, McM Sports Information Director

Women's Basketball Topped at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Another road game versus an NCAA Division II foe spelled another setback for the McMurry women's basketball team, dropping a 65-48 decision at Angelo State University. The War Hawks fell to 1-7 overall and the Rambelles improved to 2-5.

Since playing its season opener at home back on November 15, the young McM team has played seven-consecutive road games, logged better than 4,000 miles and 75 hours on buses. The War Hawks have one more road contest at Lubbock Christian on Saturday (2 p.m.), before finally returning to Kimbrell Arena on December 12.

At ASU, McMurry struggled early, shooting just 22 percent (6-27) in the first half and finding itself out-rebounded by a 26-13 margin by the Rambelles. Conversely, ASU shot 53 percent from the field (17-32) in the first half. That resulted in a 40-17 Angelo State cushion heading into the intermission.

Angelo led wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 7-1 advantage before the War Hawks got their first field goal at 16:12 of the first period on a Haley Welch jumper.

McM's leading scorer, Taylor Neal (15.3 p.p.g.), went down with an injury early in the opening stanza and was held without a point. McM would also lose junior Taylor Russell – who still was the team's leading scorer versus Angelo State with 13 points – later in the game, as well.

Russell was 5-of-10 from the floor and made good on 3-of-4 free throw attempts. Russell had five rebounds and a block, as well, before exiting the game in the second half.

Sophomore Haley Welch was the team's only other double-digit scorer with 10 points on a 5-for-12 shooting game. Welch dished off three assists.

McM newcomer Tayler Boroson had a balanced eight points and seven rebounds, along with a pair of steals. Senior Adijatu Disu added seven points.

For the game, McMurry upped its shooting percentage to 28.3 percent (17-60), while the Rambelles cooled down to 41.9 percent (26-62) overall.  ASU held a decided advantage on the glass, out-rebounding McM by a 50-37 margin.
