Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Dave Beyer, McM Sports Information Director

War Hawks Handcuffed by Rangers, 77-53

DENVER, Colo. – McMurry University women's basketball concluded its three-game road trip to Colorado with a 77-53 loss at Regis University. The setback left the War Hawks with a 1-3 record on the young season, while the Rangers remained unbeaten (3-0).

RU held McM to a 31-percent shooting night (16-51) overall, while keeping the War Hawks quiet from beyond the arc as well after they went 0-8 from long range. Conversely, Regis made good on nearly7 46-percent of its field goals (27-59), including burying eight treys.

Junior Taylor Russell had her best offensive performance ever for McM, and by quite a bit. Russell – who's previous career-high game was nine points – unleashed a 17-point effort on Regis. Russell was just four-of-11 from the field, but hit nine-of-11 free throw attempts.

No other McM player breeched double-digit scoring. Taylor Neal came off of the McMurry bench to contribute seven points and Adijatu Disu added six. Tayler Boroson, Ashley Hasseltine and Arielle Bermudez all had five points, apiece.

Mishae Rope led the War Hawks' rebounder, grabbing nine boards in 13 minutes off the bench.  Boroson pulled down six caroms of her own.

Much as it has been in each of its three losses, McMurry got out early versus Regis, leading by eight points less than five minutes into the game. A three-point play by Russell put her team ahead, 12-4, at that juncture.

But a strong surge by the Rangers helped the hosts overtake McM and lead at the intermission, 33-26.

RU would open the second stanza like a team possessed, scoring the first 11 points and extending its margin to 44-26. Neal's jumper with 14:56 left to play finally got McMurry its first points of the period.

But Regis clamped down on the War Hawks in the second half, out-scoring the visitors by a 44-27 margin to win going away.

The road warrior War Hawks will have little time to recover from the grueling Colorado swing. McM plays at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., before heading back to the Centennial State for the Holiday Inn-Airport Thanksgiving Classic at Colorado Mesa University.
