ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's women's soccer team closed the books on 2014 by finishing with the first-ever winning record in school history, thanks to its 7-0 drubbing of Southwestern Adventist University at Wilford Moore Stadium. The War Hawks finished the season with a 7-5-1 overall record.
It was a fitting finale on "Senior Day," and especially for the trio of fourth-year players –
Kristen Grant,
Paige Harwell and
Addison Tate – who were a part of head coach
Alan Riches' first recruiting class. The group has been a cornerstone of the growth of McM women's soccer.
Additionally, three other seniors who played this season only –
Bethany Johnstone,
Shy Guill and Shelby Wattenbarger – were also recognized during halftime ceremonies.
But it was Riches' trio of four-year letterwinners who provided virtually all of the team's offensive punch in their final time wearing the Maroon & White.
Tate – normally more of a defensive player – got the opportunity to score today and took advantage of it, registering a "hat trick." Tate went a perfect three-for-three on shot attempts, for her first collegiate three-goal game.
Harwell also tallied a goal.
Grant, who is already the War Hawks' leader in virtually every career offensive category, added to her totals with two goals and two assists versus the Lady Knights. Grant finished 2014 with 10 goals and 10 assists and, for her McM career, has 25 goals, 18 assists and 68 points.
Junior
Holiday Williams had a goal and assisted on the first two goals of the match (by Grant and Tate), as well. Freshman
Alexa Ledesma Bear also had an assist.
Freshman goalkeeper
Ashley Hemphill registered her fourth shutout of the season, picking up three saves. The McM defense – led by Johnstone,
Erin Casey and
Chelsey Coffey – kept the match in front of them most of the afternoon and in the SWAU half of the field.
