Â
AUSTIN, Texas --- McMurry University senior forward
Connor Robinson had quite a homecoming, scoring a career-high 44 points and leading McMurry to a 101-93 season-opening win at Concordia University-Texas.
Â
Robinson – a graduate of Austin's Bowie High School - was just one point shy of the school's single game scoring record of 45 points (by Donnie Ray Cruse vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor in 1979) with his monster game. Robinson did set McM game records for most free throws attempted (23) and free throws made (20) in the win.
Â
Robinson hit 12-of-16 shots from the field and registered the double-double by also pulling down 15 rebounds before fouling out.
Â
Also coming up with a nice effort in the opener for
Clif Carroll's crew – and somewhat overshadowed by Robinson's stat line - was
Jordan Holmes. Holmes made good on 9-of-16 from the field and 5-of-8 from the free throw stripe on his way to a 24-point afternoon.
Â
Hondo Webb added nine points and five rebounds to the War Hawks' coffers.
Â
McMurry took the lead for good on a layup by Robinson at the 13:13 mark of the first half, and never looked back. The War Hawks led by as many as 20 points with 6:07 left to play (94-74) and held a double-digit lead for the bulk of the second period.
Â
As a team, McM shot a blistering 58.8 percent from the floor (30-51) and was nearly 76 percent (40-53) from the free throw line.
Â
McM also out-rebounded the Tornados by a 44-37 margin. The War Hawks did commit 32 turnovers, compared to 23 for CUTX.
Â
McMurry improved to 28-4 all-time versus the Tornados. The War Hawks have won the past five meetings versus CUTX, as well.
Â
McMurry will net play an exhibition game at Angelo State University next Tuesday (Nov. 18). Tipoff in San Angelo is at 8 p.m.
