ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University women's tennis team closed out its 2012-13 season with a pair or losses on Saturday at the National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region championships, host by McM at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks dropped their morning match to eventual champion Southern Nazarene University and then fell to Dallas Baptist University in the afternoon, both by 8-1 scores.
Versus SNU, McMurry's lone victory came at No. 3 doubles were the duo of
Salitza Abrantes and
Jessica Bentley defeated the Crimson Storm's Karina Kotova and Payton Bergmann, 8-5.
In addition to Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, Southern Nazarene swept all six singles matches in straight sets. At No. 6 singles, McM's Sheri Haynes lost a grueling first set to SNU's Kim Wiederman, 7-6 and 10-8 in the tiebreaker. Wiederman then took the second set, 6-1.
It was an almost identical situation in the second match against Dallas Baptist. No. 3 doubles – this time occupied by senior
Chelsea Miller (playing her final match for McM) and
Sydney Gonzalez – won, 8-2, over Alexa Mentesana and Leah Smith from the Patriots.
At No. 6 singles, Haynes got into another barn-burner of a match. Haynes won the opening set over Mentesana, 6-2, but then dropped the second set, 6-4. It was Mentesana taking the third-set tiebreaker, 10-7.
Abrantes was the War Hawks lone representative on the NCCAA Central Region All-Tournament Team.
McM ends its season 6-15 overall.
