Women's Tennis Splits Saturday Matches in Midland

MIDLAND, Texas – The McMurry University women's tennis team split its Saturday matches, losing a heartbreaker to Heartland Conference foe UT-Permian Basin, 5-4, and bouncing back to defeat Sul Ross State, 9-0. The War Hawks' women's team is now 2-3 overall on the year.

The McM squad got off to a good start by sweeping all three doubles competitions against UTPB. Lauren Renner and Dana LeMieux were 8-5 winners at No. 1 doubles and the duo of Chelsea Miller and Sydney Gonzalez won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

That sandwiched a elongated 9-8 (7-4 tiebreaker) win at second doubles by McM's Jessica Bentley and Brandy Curry.  Their match was actually a foreshadowing of singles play where virtually all of the matches were hotly contested.

Renner lost at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-4 to the Falcons' Casey Acosta.

LeMieux's loss at No. 2 singles to Rafaela Chavez was one of the three singles matches to go three sets. LeMieux dropped set one, 7-6 (7-2 tiebreaker) and then fought off Chavez to win set two, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker). In the third pro-set, Chavez won by a 10-6 count.

After Bentley lost in straight sets at No. 3 singles, Miller dropped a three-set decision to UTPB's Olivia Baltazar, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7.  Curry also went the distance at No. 5 singles, losing 6-1, 6-7, 10-8.  Autumn Patterson lost at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1, to Ynez Sanchez to round out the results.

In the non-conference bout against Sul Ross State, won all three doubles matches and four of five singles contests. All but one singles match was decided in straight sets.

Brandy Curry, playing the No. 1 position, won 6-3, 6-3.  At the Nos. 3-5 singles matches, Salitzia Abrantes, Miranda Townsend and Sheri Haynes all won in straight sets. At No. 6, Miller received a default victory.

At No. 2 singles, Patterson and SRSU's Lessli Ruiz split the first two sets, with Ruiz winning the opener, 6-4, and Patterson countering with a 6-1 win in the second set. In the set-three decider, Patterson won 10-5.

In doubles, Bentley and Curry won at No. 1 and Miller/Gonzalez took No. 2.  Patterson and Haynes won by default at third doubles.
