ABILENE, Texas – McMurry women's tennis dropped a tough decision to Heartland Conference foe Dallas Baptist University, 6-3, in the season opener for both teams at Rose Park.
The War Hawks jumped out to the quick 2-1 lead in match points by winning two of the three doubles contests. At the No. 1 doubles position, the McM tandem of
Lauren Renner and
Dana LeMieux won a 9-8 (7-3) decision over the Patriots' Natalie Gennissen and Katie Daugherty.
At No. 3 doubles, War Hawk veterans
Sydney Gonzalez and
Chelsea Miller were 8-6 winners over Leah Smith and Alexa Mentesana. McM lost No. 2 doubles, when
Brandy Curry and
Jessica Bentley fell by an 8-5 margin.
McMurry was swept in five of the six singles matches to provide the DBU margin of victory. However, three matches had one set forced to a seventh game (one to a tie-breaker).
The lone War Hawk singles win was from newcomer Sheri Haynes. Haynes, playing No. 6 singles, toppled DBU's Mentesana by 6-2, 6-4 scores.
Earleir in the day, McMurry won an exhibition match versus Collin County C.C., 5-4.
