Volleyball Splits A Pair In Second Day Of Kingsville Tournament

KINGSVILLE, Texas - In the second day of the Texas A&M Kingsville tournament, the McMurry University volleyball team split a pair of contests, falling to the host Javelinas 3-2 (22-25; 22-25; 25-21; 25-22; 13-15) before defeating Schreiner University 3-1 (33-35; 25-19; 25-16; 25-12) on Saturday in Kingsville.

In the first contest the War Hawks faced their first Division II opponent, falling to Texas A&M – Kingsville by a 3-2 score.

After TAMUK took the first two contests by the same score - 25-22 –The War Hawks fought back and captured set three 25-21 and took set four 25-22. In set five, the teams would go back and forth and would be tied 9-9. However, the Javelinas would outscore McMurry 6-4 the rest of the way to take set 5 15-13 and the match 3-2.

Offensively, the War Hawks were led by 10 kills apiece by Kasi Conners and Peyton Evans. M.J. Vickers added nine kills and Stephanie Henry notched eight on the day. Evans notched her first tripple-double of the season as she added 26 assists and 12 digs to her 10 kills. Demi Holladay also added double-digit assists with 17.

Defensively, the War Hawks were led by Ayssa Garcia's 22 digs. Evans (12), Ruby Jane Johnson (11), and Baily Wilson (10) all added double-digit digs as well.

In game two, McM dropped the first set in a marathon 35-33 to Schreiner before rattling off three straight set wins (25-19; 25-16; 25-12).

In the contest, Vickers led the way offensively as she had arguably her best game of the tournament, collecting 15 kills and making just two errors in 32 attempts (.406 hitting percentage). She was joined in double-digit kills by Conners and Henry who each totaled 12 in the game.

Defensively, the War Hawks collected 73 digs as a team and were led by Evans' 18. Garcia added 16 digs while Wilson and Holladay added 11 apiece.

The War Hawks will be back in action on Thursday August 6 when they travel to Fort Smith, Ark. for their first Heartland Conference contest against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith at 7 p.m.
