McMurry Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 In Double OT Thriller

Box Score

ABLIENE, Texas – It took two overtimes and 106 minutes, but the War Hawks men's soccer team was defeated by Hardin-Simmons University by a score of 2-1 on Friday night at Edwards Field in Abilene.

The two programs played a tightly contested contest in the first half as keeper Neil O'Sullivan and his counterpart from Hardin-Simmons, Sam Potter, kept the score at 0-0 through the first frame.

Five minutes into the second half of play, the Cowboys' Colyn Moore scored off of a deflection to give HSU the lead 1-0. However, the War Hawks would fight back and strike quickly off the foot of James Ness, who found the back of the net from the top of the goalie box to knot the game at 1-1. The teams would play to a stalemate the rest of the way and go into overtime.

After no one could put in the game winner in the first overtime and with the game looking to end in a tie in just 3:30 minutes, HSU's Moore scored his second of the game off a lead pass from Taylor Jackson to give the Cowboy's the victory.

For the War Hawks, Ness notched the first goal of his career at McMurry, and O'Sullivan stopped four shots including a big save in the first overtime to keep the score at one.

Moore led the way for HSU with two goals, and Jackson and Matt Pitcock added assists for the Cowboys.

McM will take a week off before opening their away schedule on Saturday, October 8, as they travel to Odessa, Texas for their first taste of Division II and Heartland Conference action against UT-Permian Basin. The contest against UTPB is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
