ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's volleyball team continued its winning ways beating Schreiner University in straight sets, 25-21, 26-24, 25-14. The win marks the War Hawks 13th straight victory continuing their best start in school history, and in the team improved to 5-0 in American Southwest Conference play.
The War Hawks carried a .318 hitting percentage for the match, led by
M.J. Vickers recording a match high 14 kills.
Demi Holladay and
Jasmine Qualls each recorded 18 assists in the match.
McMurry trailed by as many as four in the first set when Schreiner connected for a kill to make the score 10-6. After a 7-3 run by the War Hawks knotted the score at 13, The teams traded points until McMurry scored four of the final five points thanks to help from two kills from
Kasi Conners.
The second set went into extra points with McMurry coming out on top 26-24. McMurry nearly squandered a 20-15 lead when the Mountaineers took a 24-22 lead. But, the War Hawks then rattled off four straight points to take the match 26-24. Vickers recorded three kills and an assisted block for the final four points of the match.
McMurry started the third set on an 8-1 run capped off by a Mountaineer attack error. Schreiner battled back to get within five points after a kill from Caitlan Landt, to make the score 11-6. The War Hawks outscored the Moutaineers 14-8 for the remainder of the third set to take a 25-14 victory.
Stephanie Henry recorded two kills for two of McMurry's final three points.
Henry finished with 11 kills on the afternoon adding two block assists. Conners recorded a match high five blocks with two unassisted.
Brandi Barber and
Bailey Wilson each recorded 11 digs in the match for the War Hawks.
The win moves McMurry to 13-0 on the season and 5-0 in American Southwest Conference play. The loss takes Schreiner to 3-10 on the season and 2-3 in ASC play. McMurry will look to continue their winning streak Tuesday 6 p.m. against Concordia-Texas in Austin.
