ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University soccer teams hit the road for the second week of American Southwest Conference play facing the University of the Ozarks and Texas-Dallas Thursday and Saturday. The Women will play at 2 p.m. on Thursday and 1 p.m. on Saturday; the men will play 20 minutes after the women's games end.
The Ozarks women were picked to finish 14th out of 15 teams in the ASC preseason poll. In the 2010 season McMurry beat the Eagles 4-1 to end the 52 game winless streak that the War Hawks had suffered. The Eagles have posted a 1-1 conference record in the 2011 season, defeating Louisiana College 3-1 and falling to Mississippi College 4-0. The Ozarks are led by Alex Cannon recording six goals and one assist.
Texas-Dallas was picked to finish third out of 15 teams in the ASC preseason poll. The Comets have posted a 2-0 conference start, with wins over Mississippi College, 3-0, and Louisiana College, 6-0. UTD is led by Leah Bowyer who has recorded four goals and three assists helping her team to a 4-2 overall record.
The War Hawks women have posted a season record 1-4 record and a 0-2 record in ASC play. Sophomore
Rachel Moore leads McMurry with two goals on the season. Freshman
Kristen Grant has added one goal and one assist for the War Hawks.
On the men's side the Ozarks were picked to finish 11th out of the 15 teams in the ASC preseason poll. The Eagles have started ASC play 1-1, beating Louisiana College 3-0 and falling to Mississippi College 3-0. The Eagles are led by Eloy Salgado who has recorded five goals and two assist on the season. He has been helped by teammate Tony Santoro has landed four goals.
Texas-Dallas was picked to finish fourth out of the 15 teams in the ASC preseason poll. Finished last season with an 8-2-2 conference record and a third place finish in the ASC. The Comets go into the weekend with a 1-0-1 conference record beating Mississippi College 1-0 and tying Louisiana College 0-0. They have only recorded four goals on the season two coming from Mark Brooks. The Comets goalie Steven Nicknish has recorded four shutouts on the year.
The McMurry War Hawk men have posted a 1-5 overall record and a 0-2 conference record. Freshman
Mario Varela has recorded two of the team's five goals. Junior
Ryan Prince has two assists on the year.
