ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry University women's soccer team is set to open American Southwest Conference play Friday 4 p.m. against Texas-Tyler at Edwards Field. The War Hawks will also play host to Concordia University Saturday at 4 p.m. McMurry goes into the contests with a 1-3 record.
McMurry is coming of its first win of the season taking a 3-2 victory over the University of the Southwest on Sept. 13. The War Hawks led by Freshman
Mario Varela who has recorded two goals on the season including the game winner against USW. Freshman
Ian McCarthy and
Cody Gentry have each scored one goal.
The Texas-Tyler Patriots come into the contest with a 3-1 record pitching two shutouts. The Patriots are led by Jake Urbaniak who has recorded two goals and one assist on the season. Urbaniak was named preseason ASC defensive player of the year coming off of a season where he was named ASC Tournament MVP. Tyler was picked to repeat as ASC champions in the preseason poll. McMurry lost to the Patriots 6-0 last season.
Concordia University comes into the weekend with a 0-2 record with losses to Houston-Tillotson and Austin College. The Tornados have three different players with goals on the season. Concordia was picked to finish 12th out of the 15 teams in the ASC preseason poll.
