RICHARDSON, Texas –
Keshia Collins scored 11 points and recorded a game high 13 rebounds as McMurry University knocks off undefeated American Southwest Conference opponent Texas-Dallas Saturday afternoon, 53-49. The War Hawks took advantage of 11 points off turnovers in the second half to take the four-point victory.
Celeste Belizario led the team with 12 points adding four boards helping the War Hawks to the victory. Collins added three assists and four steals in the game.
Rikeita Thomas scored eight points and recorded four assists leading the offense. McMurry shot 40 percent from the floor compared to a 36-percent effort for the Comets.
McMurry jumped out to an early lead after a 16-3 run to start the game. Belizario took a
M.J. Vickers pass in for the layup to record the teams final points of the run with 10:18 remaining in the first half. The Comets responded with an 18-2 run of their own capped off by a UTD layup with 1:58 remaining. With three seconds remaining in the half McMurry's Thomas sank two free throws to cut the Comet lead to 23-22 going into the locker room.
The War Hawks started the second half with a 6-0 run capped off by a Collins jumper just two minutes and three seconds into the half. With 14:54 remaining in the game and the score tied at 29 the Comets recorded their own 6-0 run lasting 3:14. With the War Hawks down six the teams traded points until McMurry was able to tie the game at 41 after a three point bucket by Vickers with 7:23 left in the game. The Comets made a late run with to tie the game at 49 with 2:35 left, but a layup by Belizario, one free throw apiece from Collins and
Jamie Wilson proved to be enough for the McMurry Victory.
McMurry's bench outscored UTD's bench in the second half 9-5. The team also took advantage of 10 offensive rebounds in the second half scoring seven-second chance points.
McMurry remains undefeated in ASC play at 4-0 and carries a 5-1 overall record. The War Hawks handed the Comets their first loss of the season falling to 6-1 on the season and 3-1 in ASC action. McMurry returns home to face East Texas Baptist University Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. in Kimbrell Arena.
