Volleyball team to open season against stiff competition in San Antonio

The McMurry volleyball team will tip off its 2010 season in San Antonio Friday and Saturday at the Trinity University River City Classic with three matches. McMurry begins the tournament with two matches Friday with Whitworth University at 1 p.m. and the hosts, Trinity at 3:15 p.m.

Saturday, McMurry will take on the University of Massachusetts at Boston at 3:30 p.m.; McMurry has never played either Whitworth or UMass-Boston in school history. Whitworth, out of Spokane, Wash., went 10-17 last season and enters this season with a 1-1 record.

Trininty is an NCAA Division III national power and enters the season with a No. 12 national ranking from the AVCA. McMurry may have its hands full with the Tigers, who posted at 30-12 record in 2009. UMass Boston, out of the Little East Conference in the NCAA Division III, posted a 30-5 record in 2009.

McMurry finished the season at 18-12 last year and returns most of its key players from the 2009 squad that reached the American Southwest Conference semi-finals round of the postseason tournament.

Following the tournament in San Antonio, McMurry will play in Austin College's tournament Sept. 10-11 before diving into conference play Sept. 14 against Howard Payne in Brownwood.
