SHERMAN, Texas - Terah Brown and #M.J. Vickers# led McMurry to a 25-23, 25-15, 25-17 win over Hendrix College Friday night in the team's season opener. Brown had 11 kills and five blocks while the freshman, Vickers, had six kills and four blocks in her college debut.

McMurry, off to a 1-0 start on the year, faces Austin College Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in day two of the University of Dallas Tournament and will play UD immediately following at Noon.

Vickers' six kills came on just nine attacks and she didn't have an error giving her an impressive .667 hitting percentage. Brown did her damage on 19 attacks, she had two attack errors but still managed a solid .524 hit percentage on the night.

Defensively, the team had 10 total blocks led by Brown's four assisted blocks and one solo; Vickers had four assisted blocks as well.

Kelsey Campbell and Carmyn Wingrove split the setter duties Friday night and had 18 and 16 assists respectively to lead McMurry. Sarah Anding had 16 digs on the defensive side and Danielle Kelton chipped in 15.

“We did a lot of things well tonight. After we got over the initial nervousness, the girls were very aggressive and played well in everything that they did,” said McMurry head coach Cammie Petree.

As a team, McMurry also had seven service aces, which was a point of emphasis for Petree's team.

“We had more errors than aces, and we'd like to reverse that,” she said. “But tonight they were being extremely aggressive with their serves, which is what we want, so overall I was pleased.”

Austin College defeated Hardin-Simmons in four sets, and for McMurry to beat the 'Roos tomorrow on their home floor, Petree said that McMurry will need more of the same.

“I was proud of the team's spirit and energy tonight. Not only did they have it on the floor, but the bench was extremely energetic as well. You could tell they were the aggressors and wanted to win.”
