Lewis leads McMurry women to first ever Texas DIII Championship

SEGUIN – Carla Lewis' school-record performance in the women's 6K race helped McMurry win its first ever Texas DIII Championships Saturday in Seguin. Lewis broke her own school record for the second consecutive week with a 24-minute flat performance to finish second overall.

McMurry had five runners finish in the top 16 and defeated UT-Tyler, the runners up, by 22 points. McMurry finished with 43 points, UT-Tyler was second with 65, and Trinity was third with 73 points. Southwestern (92), Texas Lutheran (108), Hardin-Simmons (139), University of Dallas (189), Concordia-Texas (216) and LeTourneau (256) rouned out the fourth-through ninth spots respectively.

Alaisha Guerra finished fourth overall for McMurry and her time of 25:10 was the sixth fastest 6K time in school history. Kurstin Draper placed eighth (26:11.40), Brittney McGuire finished 14th (26:47.50), and Katlie Dieterich (26:47.50) was right behind at 15th place. Katie Shadowens (28:17.20) and Tara McMullen (28:54.20) rounded out McMurry's seven runners with 25th and 36th places respectively.

McMurry's women had never won the Texas DIII Championships, which is in its fifth year as a race.

On the men's side, McMurry finished fourth and Trinity took the men's Texas DIII championships. Brad Mullens finished third overall with a  time of 27:15.60. Todd Neer (28:18.90) placed 13th and Ken Wheeler (28:51.20) placed 19th in the 8K race.

Corey Werner (29:40.40) placed 22nd, Colby Freehauf (32:34.10) finished 34th and Jeff Batsche (33:11.70) rounded out McMurry's men with a 38th-place finish.

McMurry returns to action Oct. 3 in Abilene at the Hardin-Simmons Invitational at Seabee Park.
