ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons swept McMurry in the first meeting of this season's cross-town showdown 25-14, 25-23, 25-22 at the Cowgirls' Mabee Complex Wednesday night. Madison Reyes and Kaela Parnell led the Cowgirls with 13 kills apiece and Chelsie Fowlwer chipped in 11.
McMurry's only lead in the first set was 2-1 before HSU dominated the first set hitting .353 in the opening set. McMurry led 12-7 in the second set but squandered the lead and the Cowgirls game back to edge the visitors. Again in the third set, McMurry built a 13-9 lead but let it slip away again.
Reyes was the most efficient of the kill leaders for the Cowgirls hitting an impressive .500 on 24 attacks. Parnell hit .294 and Fowler hit .348. Sam Lucien helped her team hit .313 with 42 assists and eight digs. HSU libero Gracen Harris led with 19 digs and Reyes had three total blocks.
Freshman
M.J. Vickers led McMurry in the losing effort with seven kills and a .353 hitting percentage. Three McMurry players finished with double-digit digs with
Carmyn Wingrove leading with 14,
Brenda Jackson had a dozen and
Sarah Anding had 11.
Terah Brown had two solo blocks and an assisted block and four kills on the night. Wingrove led with 15 assists and
Kelsey Campbell had 13 in the two-setter format.
Hardin-Simmons improved to 6-4 overall and 3-1 in the American Southwest Conference West Division while McMurry fell to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the ASC West.
McMurry returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. with its first home game at Kimbrell Arena against Sul Ross State.
