SHERMAN, Texas – Austin College knocked off McMurry in a pitchers' duel Tuesday afternoon as the 'Roos shutout McMurry, 3-0, in a non-conference game played at Baker Field.
The loss drops McMurry to 10-10 on the year as they look to rebound on Friday when they open a three-game American Southwest Conference West Division set against Mary Hardin-Baylor at Walt Driggers Field. Meanwhile, the win improves Austin College to 7-11.
The game was a pitchers duel into the fifth inning, with McMurry freshman pitcher
Jared Wallace working on a one hitter through four innings and Austin College's Tyler Steed and Will Chermak combining to surrender just three hits heading into the bottom of the fifth.
But in the bottom of the fifth, Austin College's Sean Muder and Matt Finke each reached base on back to back bunts to start off the inning, and two batters later John Reisig singled to right to load the bases for Bennett Herrick. Herrick then delivered the biggest hit of the game as he nailed a two-RBI double to center field, which plated Muder and Finke to break the scoreless game. The 'Roos would tack on one more run in the fifth inning, which ultimately would be the last run of the game.
Those runs would prove to be all the run support the Austin College pitching staff would need, as John Schulmeister worked 1.1 scoreless innings and Christian Curtis struck out three and didn't allow a hit in 2.2 innings of work to earn the save.
Wallace surrendered just three runs on six hits while striking out four in 7.0 innings to take the loss for McMurry. McMurry struggled at the plate as they only tallied five hits for the game. Junior catcher
Jeff Jackson had the best day at the plate for McMurry as he went 2 for 4.
