CLARKSVILLE, Ark. -- McMurry completed the three-game series sweep of the University of the Ozarks on Saturday as they won the first game of the twinbill, 5-1, before finishing the American Southwest Conference crossover sweep with a 9-4 victory.
McMurry has now won five in a row as they improve to 5-3 on the year; meanwhile, the Eagles fall to 3-6. McMurry returns to action next Friday and Saturday when they host Texas Tyler for a three-game set at Walt Driggers Field.
In game one, McMurry pitcher
Dakota Smith had his stuff working as he held the Ozarks to one run and just six hits over six innings of work.
Derek McBride pitched one inning of scoreless relief to close out the seven-inning game for McMurry.
The big hitter for McMurry in game one was designated hitter Matt Thomson, who went 2 for 2 in the game with both of his hits being solo home runs over the right field fence. Thompson also walked in the game and later scored as he finished the game with three runs scored and two RBI. His offensive production along proved to be more than enough for Smith and McBride.
In game two, Ozarks held a 2-1 lead until the top of the fourth when rightfielder
Jake Mullin hit an opposite field two-run homer over the right field fence. McMurry tacked on another run in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead, but the Eagles responded in the bottom of the seventh as they scored two runs of their own to tie the game at four.
But McMurry scored one run in the eighth to take back the lead at 5-4, and then blew the game open in the ninth as they scored four more runs to seal the victory. McMurry reliever Zach Hewitt pitched a perfect eighth inning to get the win.
