ALPINE – The first-place McMurry women's basketball team continued its winning ways Thursday night as they knocked off Sul Ross State, 73-41, in an American Southwest Conference West Division game played at the Gallego Center.
McMurry has now won four in a row as they improve to 18-4 overall and 15-3 in conference play. McMurry returns to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they take on Howard Payne in Brownwood for a huge ASC West showdown. Meanwhile, the loss drops the Lobos to 1-20 and 1-17.
McMurry led 32-20 at halftime before cruising in the second half as they outscored the Lobos 41-21 in the frame. The 41 points is a season-low for the McMurry defense. McMurry's defense held Sul Ross State to a paltry 32 percent shooting from the floor (12 of 38), while McMurry shot 45 percent (29 of 65) for the game including 52 percent in the second half (17 of 33). McMurry outrebounded the Lobos 41-31 for the game and McMurry's defense helped force 27 Sul Ross State turnovers.
All 15 of McMurry's players played in the game and 12 of them scored.
Allison Nelson scored a team-high 12 points for McMurry while
Anna Berthel followed with 11 points and four rebounds.
