2008 ASC Spring Distinguished Scholar Athlete Team
Brent Voorhees highlighted a group of McMurry athletes who were named to the distinguished scholar athlete teams by the American Southwest Conference Wednesday. Voorhees was named the distinguished scholar athlete for all ASC baseball players while tracksters
Bert Green & Molly Fuston along with women's tennis player
Kristin Bray were honored in their respective sports.
The group of 68 athletes from around the conference were selected for their athletic and academic excellence for the spring sports. The honor, in its first academic year, recognizes student-athletes that achieve a higher level of academic achievement (a 3.20 grade-point average or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team. From that list - limited to one nominee per school in each ASC championship sport - the Sports Information Directors from the conference's 15 member institutions vote on a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete from each sport.
Voorhees becomes the second McMurry athlete to be selected as the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete for his respective sport. Tarra Richardson was the ASC selection for women's basketball when the winter scholar athlete teams were released.
From around the conference, Mary Hardin-Baylor's Ryan Eastman was named the scholar athlete for men's golf, Texas Lutheran's Carly Hansen earned the honor for women's golf, Alanna Ganemi of TLU took the women's tennis award, UT-Dallas' Amber Griffin tabbed the softball honor, Missisippi College's Chris Dunn was selected as the men's tennis representative and UT-Tyler's R.J. Cowan was selected as the men's track and field.
Voorhees hit .349, belted 10 home runs and drove in 52 runs his senior season. He carried a 3.91 GPA in mathematics over his four-year career at McMurry. Tuesday he was named second team academic all-America by ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Bray was a first team all-ASC West Division selection for her junior season and helped McMurry's women to their second-straight ASC postseason appearance. She was also named academic all-conference earlier in the school year.
Green won a national title in the men's 4X100-meter relay, was an all-American in the 100-meter dash and helped the men's team win the first national title in school history for any sport since McMurry opened its doors in 1923.
Fuston, a two-sport standout at McMurry, was the High Point Female Athlete of the Year at the ASC Track Championships in April. She also participated on the women's volleyball team and is a 2-time academic all-conference selection.
