Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box
After a Friday shutout by Clint Johnston, the McMurry pitchers didn't allow an earned run in either game of the doubleheader Saturday and McMurry completed a sweep over the Schreiner Mountaineers with a 7-3 win in game one and a 10-0 victory in the series capper. Cody Curry moved to 6-0 with a complete game win in game one while Dakota Smith tossed 8.2 innings of scoreless ball to move to 2-0 on the year.
More importantly, McMurry improved to 8-4 in the American Southwest Conference West Division and moved back to second place after dropping to third a week ago. The three wins also gave McMurry an 18-11 overall record for the season.
On the mound, Johnston, Curry and Smith were the heroes for McMurry in the series. On the offensive end Derek David homered in each game and drove in nine runs for the series. In Tuesday's loss to Trinity, the senior third baseman homered and drove in three runs to give him four homers and 12 RBI for the week.
McMurry has three ASC West Division series remaining against Concordia-Texas, Howard Payne and Sul Ross. McMurry will also scatter in two non-conference games down the stretch for the final 11 games of the season as the team prepares to make a run at a conference title.
Below is a summary of each game Saturday.
Game 1: McMurry 7 Schreiner 3
Cody Curry didn't allow an earned run for his second-straight start and McMurry took game one of the doubleheader over Schreiner 7-3 at Driggers Field. The Mountaineers scored one run in the sixth and two in the seventh but it wasn't enough to overcome Curry and the McMurry offense.
Derek David drove in three runs and belted his 13th home run of the season with a 2-run shot in the first inning. Steven Yurchick, George Whitten and Weston Franco all drove in runs as well for the McMurry offense.
Curry has now completed all six games he's started for McMurry at the No. 2 spot going seven innings in each of his outings. Saturday, he allowed only six hits, walked two and struck out six while lowering his ERA to a team-leading 2.60.
Game 2: McMurry 10 Schreiner 0
Dakota Smith took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and nearly completed the best outing of his career as McMurry completed a 3-game sweep over Schreiner 10-0 at Driggers Field. Smith struck out nine, allowed just four hits, and walked two to move to 2-0 on the year.
With two outs in the ninth, Smith walked A.J. Mann and hit Alex Brummel to load the bases ending his solid outing. However, Kyle Martin took just one pitch to retire the Mountaineers when Richard Sanchez grounded back to Martin, who tossed it to first to finish the game.
Derek David, Stephen Derrick and Brent Voorhees each homered in the game. For David, it was his team-leading 14th homer of the season. David was chasing Tom Williams from Concordia-Texas for the league lead; Williams had 13 bombs entering into Concordia's series with Hardin-Simmons but didn't homer in the 3-game set giving David the ASC lead.
Voorhees drove in George Whitten and David after they walked to lead off the fourth inning with a shot to left centerfield for his eighth of the year. Derrick followed with a solo homer to go back-to-back with Voorhees and highlight the 4-run fourth. David's home run came in the sixth with Whitten aboard.
Johnny Huizar broke up Smith's no-no with a bloop single with one out in the sixth inning. However, Smith went on to strike out a career-high nine batters and combined for the shutout with Martin.
