SEGUIN – McMurry sprayed 16 hits and snapped a 5-game losing streak to Texas Lutheran Friday afternoon by defeating the Bulldogs 13-5 at Katt-Isbel Field. A five-run first inning to start the game put TLU on the ropes early thanks to Lance Jones' 3-run homer that highlighted the inning for McMurry.

From there, McMurry scored one run apiece in the second, third and fourth innings. Then, the team put up a four-run spot in the sixth and later scored one run in the eighth. Kyle Harvey was nearly all of Texas Lutheran's offense; the leadoff hitter drove in all five runs for the Bulldogs, was a double short of the cycle, and had four of TLU's 11 hits.

McMurry hadn't beat Texas Lutheran since the second game of a 3-game set in 2006. Last season, the Bulldogs swept the 3-game series in the regular season and then defeated McMurry in the American Southwest Conference Championship game. With the win, McMurry improved to 13-7 overall and 3-1 in the ASC West while the Bulldogs fell to 9-11 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Brent Voorhees drove in four runs and went 2 for 4 to help McMurry win its sixth-straight game. The senior had a sacrifice fly in the first, an RBI double in the second, and a two-run single in the sixth.

Jones drove in Voorhees and Derek David with his first inning homer; it was his second home run in as many games. Jeff Jackson drove in two runs with two hits, Gerad Morris had three hits and an RBI while David and Stephen Derrick each drove in runs.

Clint Johnston threw eight innings and picked up the win on the mound for McMurry to move to 3-2 on the season. He walked four, struck out three, scattered 10 hits and surrendered five runs, but he kept TLU from ever threatening. Dakota Smith and Derek McBride combined to finish the ninth inning.

Logan Hull was TLU's starter and struggled, he was pulled in the sixth inning without recording an out and gave up 10 hits, 10 runs (five earned) walked two and struck out two to fall to 4-2 on the year. Austin Yager gave up six hits and three runs in the final four innings for the Bulldogs.

The two teams will square off in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The seven-inning game will take place first followed by a nine-inning contest. McMurry's radio crew will be joined in progress of the first game after the Abilene High School game and should have at least the entire second game on the air on ESPN Radio 1560 AM KZQQ.
