ORANGE, Calif. – McMurry received two solid starting pitching performances Saturday, but would have to settle for split winning the first game 5-2 and falling to No. 2 Chapman in the nightcap 7-6. After a 2-run loss Friday, Chapman took the series for the second-straight season Saturday in three neck-and-neck contests.

McMurry is 1-2 on the season after the three-game set and Chapman moved to 5-1 on the season. McMurry will return to action Friday and Saturday with its first home games of the year and will play host to George Fox University (Newberg, Ore.).

Below is a summary of each game.

Game 1

Senior all-American Brent Voorhees is known for his bat. However, Saturday he put together 6.2 innings of strong work on the mound to help McMurry defeat Chapman 5-2. Voorhees allowed just two solo home runs to Chapman's Kurt Yacko and McMurry's Derek David and Thomas Beckham each drove in runs in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie from which the Panthers would not recover.

Voorhees scattered just six hits, walked two and struck out one hitter to move to 1-0 for the season. His teammate Kyle Martin closed the door with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first save of the season. Martin didn't allow a hit, walked one and struck out two in his first appearance of the season.

Yacko homered in the first inning to help Chapman strike first, but McMurry responded with two runs in the second including an RBI single from Greg Guse. Yacko struck again in the third inning with another solo homer to knot the score at two.

Beckham scored George Whitten on a sacrifice fly before David singled to score Guse and McMurry took a 4-2 advantage. Beckham singled home Lance Jones in the ninth for an insurance run and the final score of the contest.

Game 2

A three-run eighth inning and a game-wining sacrifice fly by Ryan Hall in the bottom of the ninth inning spoiled McMurry's chances of taking the series from No. 2 Chapman Saturday night. The Panthers rallied from a 6-3 deficit to take the rubber match of the three-game set 7-6.

Mike Vass walked to begin the bottom of the ninth inning for Chapman, reached second on a bunt single, went to third on a throwing error and scored three hitters later when Hall popped out deep into foul territory. McMurry first baseman Stephen Derrick lost his footing on the catch and had to make the throw to home on his knees, but Vass slid in safely.

Arnold Toombs and Weston Franco helped McMurry build the 6-3 lead. Franco homered twice with a solo shot and a 2-run homer while Toombs threw seven solid innings in his first start as a McMurry baseball player.

Toombs scattered six hits, surrendered three unearned runs, walked just one and struck out six. He left the game with a 3-run advantage, but Chapman tied the game in the eighth off McMurry reliever Kyle Martin.

Lance Jones tripled twice in the loss, Brent Voorhees had an RBI and Derrick drove in a run to accompany two hits on the night.

Chapman took two of three from McMurry in Abilene in 2007; McMurry took the series in 2006 on the Panthers home field.
