With McMurry's bullpen struggling thus far this season, Saturday it got two solid performances from its starters in a doubleheader sweep over Austin College at Driggers Field. Clint Johnson and Cody Curry each pitched seven innings, struck out eight and picked up the win in their respective games to help McMurry improve to 4-5 on the season. McMurry took game one (7-inning contest) 6-1 and dominated in a 20-5 victory in the second game.
Below is a summary of each game.
Game 1
Clint Johnston threw a complete game 5-hitter and struck out eight while Derek David hit two homers to help lead McMurry to a 6-1 win over Austin College Saturday afternoon. Johnston gave up three consecutive singles in the fourth inning, but other than that the Kangaroos couldn't solve the junior starter.
Six of his eight strikeouts caught the 'Roos looking and the only run AC posted came in the sixth when Andy White led off the inning by reaching on an error and later came around to score.
Johnston scattered five hits and didn't walk a batter to move to 1-1 on the season. Matt Finke, Scooter Means and Bennett Herrick were all victims of Johnston's corner-painting performance and struck out twice.
David hit a solo shot in the first inning to get the scoring started for McMurry and added to a four-run 6th inning by driving in Steven Yurchick with a 2-run shot for his first multi-homer game of his career at McMurry.
Yurchick finished with two hits and an RBI, Weston Franco drove in a run and Stephen Derrick had an RBI to accompany two hits. AC's Patrick Ray drove in White for the team's only RBI. The Kangaroos' Will Chermak picked up the loss in his first appearance of 2008.
Game 2
A 13-run 2nd inning and a solid pitching performance from Cody Curry helped propel McMurry to a 20-5 win over Austin College in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at Driggers Field. McMurry pounded out 21 hits and Curry struck out eight in seven innings to help lead the home team.
George Whitten started the scoring frenzy in the second with an RBI single to drive in Jeff Jackson. Nate Love then tripled to drive in two, Brent Voorhees singled home a run, and Franco drove home Voorhees to make the score 6-0.
Shores then hit a lined-shot off AC starter Cory Stevens clearing the bases for his first home run of the season and the first grand slam for McMurry of the season. After the 10-0 start, Love singled home another run and two batters later Brent Voorhees hit a towering blast to left field for a 3-run homer to make the score 14-0. Franco led off the top of the 5th inning with a solo home run - his fifth of the season. Steven Yurchick also hit a solo shot for his first homer since joining McMurry's team last season in the seventh inning. Later in the inning, Stephen Derrick hit a bases-clearing triple to close out the scoring for McMurry.
Curry scattered nine hits, gave up four runs, walked just one and struck out eight in his first start of the season to move to 1-0. Kyle Martin closed the final two innings and gave up a solo homer to Scooter Merritt in the ninth as his only run surrendered in relief.
Shores finished with three hits and four RBI while Voorhees drove in four runs with two hits as well. Yurchick had four hits and three runs along with his homer in the leadoff spot. Lance Jones was the only McMurry player without an RBI but still had three runs and three hits.
Both teams will square off with one more nine-inning contest Sunday at 1 p.m. McMurry will be looking for a sweep and a chance to even its record at 5-5, while Austin College will look to avoid the sweep after falling to 4-4 after Saturday.
