AUSTIN – The lead changed 21 times, but McMurry came out on top to do its part in keeping its playoff hopes alive with a 78-76 road win over Concordia-Texas. Chris Beck's game-winning bucket with 22 seconds remaining followed with a steal with 13 seconds left helped McMurry sweep the season series with Concordia. Valentino Maxwell's last second layup attempt fell short for Concordia.
Unfortunately for McMurry, Howard Payne's 64-58 win over Texas Lutheran officially eliminated McMurry from ASC postseason competition and the team will miss the tournament for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
On the other hand, McMurry still has a chance to avoid its first losing season since 1992-93 with a win over Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday. The win over the Tornados Thursday night evens McMurry's overall record at 12-12 and improves its record in league play to 9-11.
Beck was the star Thursday with 22 points on 7 of 9 shooting; he also converted on 8 of 13 free-throw attempts and grabbed nine rebounds. Alex Robles had just two points in the first half but caught fire in the second and finished with 17 points including three 3-pointers in the second period. Beck's 22 points was a career high.
Maxwell had 14 off the bench and Brad Walker led with 17 points for the Tornados, however, McMurry held Walker to two points in the second half.
After a poor shooting effort in the first half for both teams, McMurry shot 51.5 percent from the floor in the second half while Concordia was close behind at 50 percent. However, the difference was, McMurry was able to get to the free throw line 33 times, converting 20 while CTX converted on 11 of only 14 opportunities.
Concordia-Texas fell to 16-8 overall and 13-7 in league play; the Tornados have already locked down a spot in the conference tournament.
McMurry's final game of the season is against the ASC West Champion Mary Hardin-Baylor at 3 p.m. McMurry defeated UMHB earlier this season at home.
