KERRVILLE - Tarra Richardson became the American Southwest Conference's all-time leader in scoring Thursday night in Kerrville helping No. 6-ranked McMurry defeat Schreiner 81-68. Richardson needed 16 points to pass Mississippi College's Lacey Kennedy on the all-time chart, but the senior posted 21 points and 13 rebounds in the win.
The win marks the 13th straight for McMurry and matches the best start in school history at 15-1. The 13 straight wins also ties a school record; the team began the season 13-0 in the 2005-06 season.
Richardson now has 1,896 points for her career. She was 7 of 19 from the field, 7 of 13 from the free-throw line and had 10 of her 13 rebounds in the second half. Maigen Sawyer, Allison Nelson and Amber Horton all had double figures for McMurry as well. Sawyer had 14 points, Nelson had 12 and Horton 10.
McMurry began sluggish and trailed much of the first half before pulling away at the end to lead 33-29. However, Schreiner came out firing in the second half as well and led with seven minutes remaining.
Richardson's record-setting bucket came with 6:09 left in the game and put McMurry up 59-56. However, the Lady Mountaineers tied the score at 62 before McMurry was able to pull away and closed the game with a 19-6 run.
Schreiner's Monica Enriquez posted a game-high 25 points and seven assists. She shot 9 of 15 from the floor and was 4 of 6 from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Lady Mountaineers fell to 5-11 overall and 4-8 in league play while McMurry improved 15-1 overall and a perfect 12-0 in the ASC. McMurry will face the winless Texas Lutheran Lady Bulldogs Saturday at 1 p.m. to try and set new school records for the best start and longest win streak.
