Steven Luckey hit two free throws with eight seconds remaining and Hardin-Simmons held off McMurry in double overtime 78-75 Monday night at the Mabee Complex. McMurry had trailed by 10 points with 4:57 left in regulation but McMurry went on a 14-4 run to close regulation.
However, McMurry's effort fell short in the second overtime. In the first overtime period, neither team got more than two points ahead. Alex Robles, who had forced the overtime period for McMurry with a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining also canned two free throws with six seconds left in the first overtime to tie the score at 62-all.
In the second overtime, the game got away from McMurry as HSU led by six with 47 seconds left. However, Robert Moreno hit a lay up to make cut the lead to four, HSU's Rian Stubbs missed one of two free throws on the ensuing possession, Robles canned a three with 16 seconds left and after a Dan Jean lay up with 10 seconds remaining, DeWayne Hall cut the lead to one point with a 3-pointer with eight seconds left.
Luckey hit both free throws to put the Cowboys up three and Robles' 3-point attempt just missed with three seconds left.
Marcus Smith scored 22 points off the bench for the Cowboys; Mardochee Jean had 15 points, 14 boards and six blocks in the win for HSU. Rob Yeatts also had 16 points for Hardin-Simmons.
Robles led all scorers with 26 points and was 6 of 10 from 3-point land and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line. Travis Tennison had his best game of the season with 14 points and 16 rebounds; Hall pitched in 13 points off the bench.
Neither team shot well, but HSU was 44 percent from the floor in overtime while McMurry was just 5 of 14. McMurry's 19 turnovers led to 16 HSU points on the night. McMurry won the rebounding battle 55-48 and produced 22 second-chance points.
HSU improved to 7-7 overall and 6-4 in the American Southwest Conference while McMurry fell to 6-8 overall and 3-7 in league play.
McMurry's next four games are on the road. Thursday the team will play its next game against Schreiner in Kerrville at 7: 30 p.m.
