Maigen Sawyer's slump-busting 19 points led McMurry to another American Southwest Conference victory Monday over LeTourneau as the hosts went on to a 67-51 win. Sawyer shot 1 of 23 from 3-point land in the first five games of the season. However, she hit 5 of 8 from behind the arc and added five steals to help McMurry improve to 2-0 in conference play.
LeTourneau played McMurry tough in the first half until 9:13 remaining when Jabri Butler's layup sparked a 14-4 run to give the team a 31-17 lead. The Lady Yellow Jackets climbed back to within eight points at the end of the half. However, the team couldn't get over the hump in the second half and McMurry cruised on.
Amber Horton had another well-rounded game for McMurry. She scored 11 points, had five assists and three steals in 30 minutes of play. Allison Nelson had nine points and four rebounds and Tarra Richardson had eight points and led the team with seven rebounds. Dominique Brown also had a good game off the bench with nine assists, five steals and four points.
Both teams shot equally; McMurry was slightly better with a 40.6 percent shooting effort while LeTourneau shot 40 percent. The Lady Yellow Jackets did a solid job on the boards and out-rebounded the No. 11 team in the nation 43-28. However, the difference in the game was ball-handling as LeTourneau had 33 turnovers to McMurry's 17.
McMurry turned the Lady Yellow Jackets' miscues into 27 points while LeTourneau scored just five points off turnovers. McMurry's depth also proved to be solid as the bench outscored LeTourneau's 20-9.
LeTourneau fell to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the ASC while McMurry improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
