LC pushes McMurry to 0-4 in the ASC with 77-76 win

McMurry fell to 0-4 in American Southwest Conference play with a 77-76 loss to Louisiana College Monday night at H.O. West Fieldhouse. McMurry led by nine points at halftime and had as much as a 15-point lead in the first half. The Wildcats' Morey Scluzacek led all scoring with 28 points and had five 3-pointers.

McMurry led 60-58 with eight minutes remaining, but LC countered with two straight-buckets and never trailed again. Robert Moreno hit a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds remaining after trailing by four points, however, after the McMurry timeout, there was not enough time to try to win the contest.

McMurry held the Wildcats' leading scorer Josh Johnson to just two points in the first half. However, the all-conference honoree from a year ago score 15 second-half points to help propel a strong second half. Point guard Justin Cole was the other LC player in double figures as he had 14 points.

LC jumped out to a 11-7 lead to begin the game, however, McMurry stormed back with a 21-2 run that gave the visitors a 28-13 lead. The Wildcats trailed 39-31 at intermission before scoring the first 10 points of the second half and controlling the game for the remainder of the contest.

The Wildcats shot 38 percent from the field, however, the story was the Wildcats' performance from beyond the arc and at the charity stripe. LC hit 11 of 26 3-point attempts, but even more impressively, reached the free-throw line 32 times and converted on 28 opportunities.

McMurry shot 46 percent from the floor. However, the team hit just 5 of 17 3-pointers and Louisiana College out-scored McMurry by 18 points from 3-point land. The team did hit 15 of 17 free throws, however, LC was able to get to the line 15 more times and was exceptional from the line.

Moreno led the team in scoring with a season-high 14 points. He also had five rebounds and five steals. Casey Jones and Alex Robles had 13 points apiece in the losing effort. Travis Tennyson played his first game with McMurry since the 2004-2005 season and scored seven points with seven rebounds in his season debut.

After beginning the season 3-0, McMurry has now lost four straight and moved to 4-3 overall. The team will have to face the American Southwest Conference East Division power Mississippi College Wednesday night in search of its first win.

The Choctaws beat Hardin-Simmons Monday night and moved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the ASC.
