McMurry University Tennis head coach Chris Breaux turned to one of his mentors when looking for an assistant coach prior to the Spring 2021 season, hiring Aubrey Irwin to fill the position in Fall 2020.
Irwin is no stranger to the program, as he was an assistant coach while Breaux was a scholar-athlete from 2010-14. Irwin's stint goes even further back than that, as he has worked with the program as early as 2006.
In his first season coaching with Breaux, Irwin assisted doubles duo Carlos Martinez and Chase Daniell to the NCAA Division III National Championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Martinez also competed as a singles competitor and won his first round match before falling in the Round of 16. Martinez/Daniell also finished in the Top 16 and were the top-ranked team in the West Region.
As an assistant, Irwin helped coach the men's and women's tennis programs to a pair of American Southwest Conference semifinal appearances with quarterfinal wins over LeTourneau. Additionally, the War Hawks had two ASC West Division Most Valuable Player award winners in Carlos Martinez and Claire Hillyer.
Irwin currently resides in Abilene, Texas.
