ABILENE, Texas - McMurry Women's Soccer fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor in a tightly contested American Southwest Conference battle, 1-0, on Thursday evening at Wilford Moore Stadium.
Weather set the tone before the opening whistle and never let up. Following a delayed start, both teams endured persistent rainfall throughout the night and an additional mid-match lightning delay that pushed the contest past the two-and-a-half-hour mark.
The War Hawks built early momentum in the attacking third, nearly scoring in the second minute when
Isabella Johnson drove a strike on target that forced an opening save.
Hayle Heinen followed with a chance in the sixth minute, and
Cienna Rodriguez put another shot on frame in the 35th minute to pace the McMurry offense through a scoreless opening 45 minutes.
Mary Hardin-Baylor broke the scoreless deadlock in the 60th minute, sneaking a ball into the net to take a 1-0 lead.
McMurry answered with heavy second-half pressure, controlling possession (54%) and racking up seven second-half shots and four corner kicks. Off the bench,
Macie Griffin provided an immediate spark with two scoring attempts, while
Cameryn Peter tested the opposing keeper with a clean strike on goal in the 68th minute.
Laila Brown spearheaded the late charge, firing two dangerous shots on frame in the 76th and 83rd minutes, both turned away.
At the other end, keeper
Cadence Foulkrod and the McMurry defense kept the contest within striking distance. Foulkrod turned away three shots, and a clutch team goal-line save in the 80th minute kept the margin at one.
Both squads finished even with 10 total shots and five shots on goal apiece. Brown led McMurry with two shots on target, while Johnson, Rodriguez, and Peter each recorded one.
The War Hawks return to Wilford Moore Stadium on Saturday, October 17th to host East Texas Baptist at 5:00 p.m.
