BROWNWOOD, TX - The McMurry women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Howard Payne on Friday at Citizens National Bank Field, giving interim head coach Madelyn Wilson her first career win.
The Yellow Jackets struck first in the 28th minute, but the War Hawks responded before the half. Keeli Villarreal tied the game with an unassisted goal in the 38th minute, her first goal of the season.
In the second half, the War Hawks' offense continued to pressure, with Madison Black scoring the game-winner in the 65th minute. The goal, Black's second of the season, was assisted by Haylie Blakley. The McMurry defense held strong in the second half, holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless.
The War Hawks outshot Howard Payne 17-3 with six shots on goal. Madison Black led the team with three total shots, followed by Laila Brown, Cienna Rodriguez, Hailey Donaldson, and Keeli Villarreal with two shots apiece. Goalkeeper Avery Anders was a rock in the net, making a crucial save in the second half to preserve the lead.
McMurry's next match will be at home next Friday, September 26, at 5:00 p.m., when they open up conference play against Centenary College. The team will also recognize its seniors following the match.
