War Hawks Cruise to SCAC-Opening Victory, Defeat Schreiner 74-56

KERRVILLE, TX – The McMurry War Hawks women's basketball team continued their perfect start to the season, defeating Schreiner University 74-56 in their SCAC conference opener at the Stephens Family Arena. The War Hawks controlled the game from the opening minutes and never relinquished the lead, showcasing a dominant all-around performance to move to 4-0 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.

McMurry established momentum immediately, using tenacious defense to force early turnovers and capitalize in transition. The War Hawks jumped out to an early 8-point lead in the first period and maintained a double-digit margin for the majority of the contest. While Schreiner attempted to close the gap, McMurry consistently found ways to score, relying heavily on efficiency in the paint and outstanding rebounding, particularly on the offensive end.

The War Hawks' success was built on interior scoring and transition play. McMurry scored 40 points in the paint and converted 19 points from fast breaks throughout the game, demonstrating their speed and athleticism. The team's aggressive rebounding, particularly their 10 offensive boards, led directly to 10 second-chance points, maintaining pressure on the Mountaineers throughout the 40 minutes. The War Hawks extended their lead to its largest margin of 25 points in the fourth period, cruising to the final 74-56 victory.

Top War Hawk Performers

  • Helena Chadwick: Led the team in scoring with 25 points, showcasing her versatility with 9-of-22 shooting from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point range. She also secured five rebounds and four steals.
  • Aryana Cleveland: Was dominant on the boards and inside, finishing with 19 points and a team-high 11 rebounds (seven offensive). She was also highly effective at the free-throw line, sinking 7-of-10 attempts.
  • Jordan Bravo: Provided strong perimeter play, contributing 11 points and six rebounds, highlighted by a sharp 3-of-7 shooting performance from beyond the arc.
  • Jordan Gillespie: Was perfect from the field, scoring 6 points on 3-of-3 shooting, and added six rebounds and two steals, providing a high-efficiency performance.
