McMurry University softball lost its home finale to crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons University at Edwards Field, falling 3-2, 2-1 and winning 5-4.
In the first game Friday, April 26, coach David McNally's team scored both runs in the fourth inning. Junior right fielder Aliyah Tanguma (Kyle, Texas) singled to left field for a RBI, freshman first baseman/designated player Reaghan Staehely (Mission, Texas) advanced to second base and junior center fielder Mercedes Camacho (El Paso, Texas) scored. Sophomore first baseman Trista Brown (Crosby, Texas) then singled to left field for a RBI, sophomore third baseman Miranda Soileau (Houston, Texas) went to second and Tanguma crossed home plate. McMurry got six hits with contributions from junior second baseman Jade Dickens (Friendswood, Texas), Staehely (3), Tanguma and Brown.
Fifth-year senior Jenna Lewis (Hearne, Texas), who went the distance in throwing seven innings while striking out seven batters, was given the loss.
In Friday's second game, McMurry scored once in the sixth inning. Senior designated player Kate Casey (Thorndale, Texas) popped up to right field for a sacrifice RBI, Staehely advanced to third and junior second baseman Jade Dickens (Friendswood, Texas) scored. McMurry collected four hits with contributions from senior left fielder Angelica Abila (Lubbock, Texas) (2), Dickens and Soileau. Abila and Soileau each stole a base.
Junior Baylee Fulps (San Angelo, Texas), who went the distance in throwing seven innings, was given the loss.
In the game Saturday, April 27, McMurry scored two runs in the fourth inning and three in the eighth. Soileau doubled to left field for a RBI and Tanguma went home. Casey then reached first base on an error by the first baseman for a RBI, Brown advanced to second and Soileau scored. In the eighth, Soileau homered for a 3 RBI and junior catcher Morgan Mehaffey (Hamilton, Texas) and sophomore shortstop Morgan Faubion (Crosby, Texas) crossed home plate. McMurry had eight hits with contributions from Faubion, Dickens (2), Tanguma (2) and Soileau (3).
Lewis, who threw two innings while striking out three, raised her record to 13-5. Freshman pitcher Emmalee Gebhart (Vail, Arizona) threw six innings and struck out five.
The seniors were recognized during the series.
McMurry, 22-12 overall and 12-9 in the American Southwest Conference, plays next weekend at Howard Payne University in Brownwood with a possible conference tourney berth on the line. Games are 2 and 4 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
