War Hawks Fall in Overtime

ABILENE – McMurry Men's Basketball fell to 0-3 in overtime games this season, losing a tough home battle against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Sunday, 85-83.

Down six points with 38 seconds left in regulation, McMurry got a three-pointer by Kino Thompson to cut the Crusader lead to 72-69. Matt Pena got a steal and drained a three-pointer to tie the game with 24 seconds to go in the second half. Pena got another steal but his three-pointer was off the mark and the teams went into the extra period.

The overtime period witnessed six lead changes before UMHB, up a point, getting a steal and sinking two subsequent free throws for a three-point lead with six seconds to go. The Crusaders fouled to make McMurry convert a make-and-miss trip to the free throw line. UMHB rebounded the missed second shot and held on for the win.

Jalen Cherry led the War Hawks with 20 points and nine rebounds. Thompson had a full line with 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Pena finished with 13 points and Josh Alcocer contributed a dozen.

McMurry is home again on Dec. 17, hosting Howard Payne at 3 p.m. That will be the last contest before the holiday break.
