ABILENE, TEXAS – McMurry University senior pitcher
Jenna Lewis keeps compiling crooked strikeout numbers.
Head coach
David McNally and her War Hawks teammates couldn't be happier.
Less than 24 hours removed from a dandy complete-game victory in the first game of an American Southwest Conference series, the Hearne, Texas, native was back at it again in the circle at Edwards Field. She replicated her strikeout total of Friday's 2-1 thriller, striking out eight UT-Dallas hitters. She carried a shutout for five and two-thirds en route to her fifth victory of the season before the Comets loaded the bags and pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth.
The visiting Comets' offensive output wasn't enough to track down another impressive plate performance from the Maroon and White. Freshman infielder
Bre Barajas (Abilene, Texas) made it four successive outings with multiple hits, going three-for-four with two RBI. Fellow underclasswoman infielder
Jade Dickens (Friendswood, Texas), junior infielder
Grace Duecker (Fredericksburg, Texas), and junior outfielder
Angelica Abila (Lubbock, Texas) added two-hit outings to the home team headlines. All of that computed to seven runs on 11 hits toward a 7-2 triumph that wrapped up a weekend league sweep.
McMurry (9-2, 3-0 ASC) takes on the University of Mary-Hardin-Baylor Friday and Saturday, March 10 and 11, at Dee Dillon Field in Belton, Texas. Start times are 4 p.m. Friday and 12 p.m. Saturday.
NOTES: Lewis has produced eight-or-more Ks in five of six 2023 starts … She moved within a win of 15 for her career, seven Ks from a second straight 50-or-more strikeouts season effort, and 12 opponent whiffs from 150 in her career.
