HOUSTON TEXAS – McMurry University senior pitcher
Jenna Lewis (Hearne, Texas) and University of St. Thomas fifth-year hurler Bailey Tisdale gave no quarter in non-conference action Friday, Feb. 24.
Lewis kept the host Celts bats at bay with five hits and one earned run in seven innings. Tisdale was just as strong, allowing the visiting War Hawks two hits while striking out three en route to a complete-game 1-0 decision.
UST managed a single score in the home half of the sixth to dash Lewis' attempt to go to 4-0 on the season. A hit by pitch, single, and walk loaded the bases, followed by a sacrifice fly to center to plate the game-decider. Head coach
David McNally's team, aiming for a seventh straight triumph to start the year, put a runner on in the seventh but couldn't bring her around.
The home team used their late-inning comeback in game one to their advantage in the nightcap. St. Thomas tallied six runs over the first two frames en route to a 10-1, five-innings win. Junior outfielder
Angelica Abila (Lubbock, Texas) drove in a run for the Maroon and White, and freshman infielder
Bre Barajas (Abilene, Texas) went two-for-two.
McMurry, dipping to 6-2, moves into the American Southwest portion of its 2023 slate Friday and Saturday, March 3 and 4. UT-Dallas visits Edwards Field for a 3 p.m. Friday doubleheader and a noon Saturday single game.
