BROWNWOOD, Texas – McMurry Women's Tennis will appear in the American Southwest Conference postseason tournament for a second straight year after a 9-0 shutout victory Saturday against Howard Payne in Brownwood, Texas.
The War Hawks (8-10, 3-2 ASC) were nearly dominant across the board en route to victory, clinching the third seed in the ASC West Division. They will face East Texas Baptist in the first round of the ASC Championship Tournament on Thursday, April 28 at 9 a.m.
The regular season finale started with three doubles victories, as Andrea Smith and McKenzie Carroll shutout their opponents in No. 3 doubles to start things out. Kaylin Parker and Bridgette Fly teamed up in the No. 2 spot for an 8-1 victory.
The top doubles spot also went in McMurry's favor, as Hope Turner and Hannah DeFriend won 8-3.
Howard Payne (1-12, 1-4 ASC) won its lone set of the day at No. 1 singles, as Lexie Nave edged Turner 7-5. Turner responded with a 6-1 win in the second set and held on in the tiebreaker to win 10-8.
The next five flights were fairly comfortable wins for McMurry, as DeFriend won No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-1. Fly, Parker and Carroll all had shutouts in the second set to win the No. 3, 5 and 6 spots. Smith won 6-3, 6-1 in Flight 4.
Thursday's ASC Championship Tournament will be hosted by UT Dallas in Richardson, Texas. If McMurry wins the quarterfinal Thursday, they will move on to Friday's semifinal at 10:30 a.m. The championship final is set for Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m.
