ABILENE, Texas – After McMurry University Softball clinched its three-game series against UT Dallas on Friday, the Comets responded with a close 5-3 win in the series finale Saturday at Edwards Field.
With the win, UT Dallas own a slight advantage over McMurry in the American Southwest Conference standings based on percentage points, but the War Hawks own rights to the series victory tie-breaker.
The Comets (16-9, 8-7 ASC) had all of its production in the second inning, rallying for five runs. This summoned Madison Morgan to pitch, who shut down UTD the rest of the way. She allowed three hits and one walk in 5.1 innings, but no runs and three strikeouts.
The War Hawks (15-10, 9-8 ASC) began chipping away with a Kate Casey RBI single in the bottom half, followed by a two-RBI double by Emily Michki in the fifth inning to make it 5-3.
After taking her first loss at the hands of McMurry yesterday, UTD's Devyn Yanello came back out and improved to 5-1 with the win. She stranded runners on the corners to stop a fifth inning rally, then stranded the tying run at the plate in the seventh.
Six War Hawks had a hit on the day, while three others had sacrifice hits. Angelica Abila, Grace Duecker, Michki, Cayleigh England and Kayla Otis all had a hit to represent the top five spots in the order. Michki's double was the lone multi-base hit of the day.
The War Hawks have their biggest test to date next weekend, as they host No. 4 Belhaven at Edwards Field. The series begins Friday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader and ends Saturday at 12 p.m.
